Scottish and Southern Energy said that there would be fewer pylons and less transmission lines than currently run through the park area.
There will be 76 pylons compared to 128 at present.
The company also said that overall there would be 200 fewer pylons than on the existing 132,000 volt transmission line, but that they would be bigger.
The height of the new pylons will range from 42m to 65m.
Almost 80% of the pylons will be lower than 57m. The height of the pylons on the existing line ranges from 25m to 41m.
Campaigners had urged the company to put the cable underground but Scottish and Southern said this would could cost between six and 12 times as much.
The power firm said that about 60% of the line would be built on a route adjacent to the existing line, which it will replace.
power produced by new wind farms and hydro schemes in the Highlands and islands to customers further south.
A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Energy said that the new route was published on its website.
He said that anyone concerned about where the line would go should consult the online map.
An application to build and operate the line would soon be submitted to Scottish Executive ministers, the company said.
Spokesman for protest group Stirling Before Pylons, Peter Pearson, said: “We are massively disappointed to learn there have been no significant changes to the proposed route.

Lee becomes Joseph in TV victory

Posted by admin - December 6th, 2009

Performer Lee Mead has landed the lead role in West End musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after winning a BBC One talent show.
Mead came top of a public vote on Any Dream Will Do, beating supermarket worker Keith Jack, 19, of Midlothian.
The victory means he will star in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Adelphi Theatre from 17 July.
The 25-year-old, from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, has already played the Pharaoh in a touring production of Joseph.
Mead also has experience as an understudy, and appeared as a dancer in Geri Halliwell’s video for It’s Raining Men.
Jack, 19, from Dalkeith, is a supermarket shelf-stacker, while third-placed Lewis Bradley, 17, is a performing arts student from Middlesbrough, who got down to the last 15 for the Billy Elliot film.
Some three million votes were cast during the course of the evening.
Mead told presenter Graham Norton: “Support has grown every week and I want to thank everyone so much and those that didn’t vote, I’m going to go out there and give you a hell of show.”
Lord Lloyd-Webber said he was “very happy” with the outcome.
“Remember, people thought that Lee was the pro. He’s only been an understudy in a show and has never performed in front of me or really very many people at all. I think it’s an amazing achievement,” he said.

Battle lines drawn against pylons

Posted by admin - December 4th, 2009

On one side were the Jacobite forces, 10,000 troops led by the Earl of Mar, and on the other, the government forces under the Duke of Argyll, with about half that
number.
The battle was sparked when the Duke mobilised his forces from Stirling to block the road south to England, where Mar had decided to move his forces.
Despite their greater numbers, the rebels were eventually forced to retreat to Perth and the MacRaes, sited on the left flank of the Jacobite army, were left exposed
and, with no cavalry support, were effectively slaughtered.
Now the Clan MacRae Society claims the site of the battle, which has been marked with a memorial, is under threat from plans by Scottish and Southern Energy to build a
137-mile power transmission line of pylons from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk.
The company has promised to make a fully informed decision on the route of the line and Mr McRae has echoed calls for a public inquiry into the proposals.
“We’re not concerned with the pylon line itself, but its going to run directly through Sheriffmuir,” he said.
“The pylons will require foundations and that will mean digging huge holes right across the battlefield.
Many of the men who died here still lie here after almost 300 years and we don’t think it’s acceptable that they should be disturbed at this time for this reason.”
Mr McRae said battlefields in Scotland were not given the same level of protection as in England, a policy he hopes will also change.
About 100 MacRaes died in the battle, a considerable number for the small clan, which had its homeland in Kintail, Perthshire.

Questions ‘dismissed

Cairngorm National Park Authority is also opposed to the application and tourism organisations have voiced their concern on the visual impact it would have.
A consultation exercise on the issue also saw more than 17,000 representations received.
Ronald MacLean, of campaign group Pylon Pressure, said opponents had fought long and hard for a public inquiry on the line, which would cross the national park and pass within sight of the Wallace Monument in Stirling.
“We are also glad an opportunity to be heard will be given to the questions that were originally dismissed by Scottish and Southern Energy,” he said.
Ian Paterson, of Stirling Before Pylons, said concerns about health and the impact on the landscape had been raised, as well as the possibility of underground cabling.
He said: “We hope these points will be fully covered in the public inquiry.”
Eleanor Scott, Green MSP for Highlands and Islands, described the inquiry as a valuable opportunity.
She added: “The upgrade does need to take place – in a careful and considered way – if Scotland is to make the most of its renewable energy resources and make our own contribution to tackling climate change.”

One million homes

Posted by admin - December 3rd, 2009

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said the existing power line from north to central Scotland must be replaced.
It has expressed hope that the plans would eventually be approved by ministers.
The power company said the £320m development was needed for the reliable transmission of electricity from renewable sources from the north of Scotland, which would be
enough to power one million homes.
However, the proposals, which would see pylons erected in some of Scotland’s most picturesque locations, including the Cairngorms National Park and the Southern
Highlands, have attracted fierce opposition since being announced in 2005.
More than 17,000 objections have been received by the Scottish Executive so far, including concerns raised by local authorities through which the power line would
pass.
Conservation body Scottish Natural Heritage has also voiced opposition.
Residents in Gravir on the Isle of Lewis have voted against proposals for a sub-sea electric cable to make landfall near their village.
The cable’s location on the mainland is being investigated as part of a public inquiry into plans to upgrade the Beauly to Denny power line.
In a secret ballot, 44 out of 58 respondents opposed the Gravir plan.
The sub-sea cable would allow electricity from wind farms on the isles to reach the mainland.
The public inquiry into plans for the 137-mile (220km) power line through the Scottish countryside has begun.
It follows years of controversy over the proposals for 600 pylons, which would be up to 65m (213ft) tall.

Extensive tour

Mr Stellmaszyk’s only concern is that voters may turn away from an entry that is without a dance routine or gimmickry, but says the song will be a hit with the Eurovision juries.
Music industry experts from all 43 countries will determine half the votes this year, and will be looking for quality of songwriting and delivery – not peripheral novelties or costumes.
The name of a world famous composer is not something they will overlook, while his musical stamp reaches far and wide
Ballads in recent years have fared well, with a simply-staged but emotional performance from Serbia’s Marija Serifovic winning the contest in 2007.
While Lloyd Webber’s Eurovision solution has been revealed, the mission has only just started, which he says he is “101% committed” to.
He has three months to polish the track, work on the staging for Moscow and nurture his protegee, who has a luxurious amount of time to perfect her performance.
And the pair’s pivotal task is to take the UK’s offering on an extensive tour of Europe for the first time.
Jade’s immediate task is to perform her song during Malta’s Eurovision final on Saturday, which is likely to be followed by other appearances aimed at picking up votes.
An early start may help the UK, with some countries not making their decision until mid-March.
The path to the Eurovision final is a long one – and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s task has only just begun.
