Professor Baron-Cohen argues that systemizers are often attracted to each other – and thus more likely to pass “autism” genes to their offspring.
He cited a survey of 1,000 members of the National Autistic Society which found fathers and grandfathers of children with autistic spectrum conditions are twice as likely to work in a systemizing profession.
In addition, students in the natural sciences have a higher number of relatives with autism than do students in the humanities, and mathematicians have a higher rate of autistic spectrum conditions compared with the general population.
Other research has found both mothers and fathers of children with autism score highly on a questionnaire measuring autistic traits.
Brain scan studies have also shown that mothers of autistic children often show patterns of brain activity more associated with men.
Professor Baron-Cohen said the rise in autism might be linked to the fact that it had become easier for systemizers to meet each other, with the advent of international conferences, greater job opportunities and more women working in these fields.
Richard Mills, of the National Autistic Society, said: “The society welcomes all new research, particularly that which helps us understand the nature and possible causes of autism and which may inform the support that we give to individuals.
“Over half a million people in the UK have a form of autism. It is a lifelong developmental disorder which requires specialist

A second study has suggested high blood pressure problems in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia increases a woman’s risk of heart disease in later life.
The study in the British Medical Journal found those who had experienced raised blood pressure in pregnancy had a long-term risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), an increased risk of stroke and a slightly increased risk of heart disease.
The long-term risks were highest for women with pre-eclampsia.
The researchers, from the University of Aberdeen, said: “Women with a history of gestational hypertension or of pre-eclampsia or eclampsia are at increased risk of hypertensive and associated diseases in later life.”
They said if there was a greater awareness of the link, it could lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of patients, potentially reducing the numbers made ill or killed by such diseases.

Indonesia’s most-wanted Islamist militant, Noordin Mohamed Top, has been killed during a raid in central Java, say police.
The man wanted for a series of deadly attacks across the archipelago was among four killed in a raid near Solo city, said the national police chief.
It is not the first time Indonesian officials have claimed Noordin is dead.
Indonesia’s president said the raid was a significant victory, but warned the militant threat was not yet over.
“We must continue to be vigilant and prepare for steps to tackle, optimally prevent and continue to hunt down terrorist leaders,” said Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Yang Liwei, a 38-year-old lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army, was only publicly confirmed as the first astronaut – or yuhangyuan – just before the flight began.
He boarded the capsule almost three hours before blast-off, cheered by a group of balloon-waving children.
Once aloft, he was said to be “reading a flight manual in the capsule of the Shenzhou V spacecraft and looked composed and at ease”.
State television said he would be eating freeze-dried shredded pork with garlic sauce and fried rice during his flight, and drinking tea.
The Shenzhou design is based on the Russian Soyuz three-person space capsule, although the Chinese space programme has made wide-ranging changes.
The project has become a matter of national prestige, with Shenzhou described in the official media as “China’s self-designed manned spaceship”.
“I will not disappoint the motherland,” Yang Liwei said before boarding the capsule.
“I will complete each movement with total concentration. And I will gain honour for the People’s Liberation Army and for the Chinese nation.”

America’s astronauts may have been the first to plant a flag, drive a buggy and play golf on the Moon.
Planting flowers, however, was not on the Apollo agenda.
Could Europe beat the mighty US to that particular goal? One small seed for man, one giant branching-out for mankind?
In fact, according to the European Space Agency’s Bernard Foing, it is more likely to be a bulb than a seed – perhaps even that most European of plants, a Dutch tulip.
“They bring their own nutrients with them, you don’t need any resources from the soil,” he told me on the fringes of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference last week.
“Also, we have looked at other types of plant like the mustard plant Arabidopsis; it’s a very resistant plant, its genome has been fully sequenced.
“So you could do experiments where you see what does it take to adapt it to another planet, where are those characteristics encoded in the genome, and so make hard science but also make technical applications of what types of plant could be engineered to better survive in these conditions, and what type of plants could be engineered to adapt to very extreme conditions, even having the possibility later to find applications on Earth as well.”
It is, at least, an intriguing vision.

Born in 1950, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim came from a prominent family from the holy city of Najaf. His father, Grand Ayatollah Muhsen al-Hakim, was the most widely-followed marja, or source of emulation, of the Shia world until his death in 1970.
After his death, Hakim and the family continued the ayatollah’s support of Shia Islamist opposition groups, campaigning against the secular, Sunni-dominated Baathist regime.
The Iraqi government responded by suppressing the Shia community, their leaders and traditions. Six of Hakim’s seven brothers were killed, while more than 50 members of his extended family were executed.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980, Hakim and his elder brother, Muhammad, left Najaf for Iran.
In 1982, the two brothers helped found Sciri, a coalition linking a number of Iraqi Shia opposition organisations that called for the establishment of an Islamic order in Iraq.
Muhammad Baqr soon became the group’s chairman, while Abdul Aziz occupied the important posts of deputy chairman and commander of its military wing, the Badr Brigade.
Funded and trained by Iran, the Badr Brigade fought alongside Iranian troops against the Iraqi army in Kurdistan during the Iran-Iraq War. It was believed to have 20,000 fighters prior to the 2003 invasion.
In 1991, following the end of the Gulf War, thousands of Badr fighters crossed over the border into Iraq to support the Shia rebellion in the South, but it was swiftly suppressed by the state.

A video of a British soldier screaming abuse at hooded prisoners in Iraq has been played at a public inquiry into the death of an Iraqi civilian.
Baha Mousa, 26, died after his arrest at a Basra hotel.
The film showed Cpl Donald Payne, who was jailed for inhumane treatment in 2007, swearing at prisoners forced to hold “stress positions”.
The inquiry, led by Sir William Gage, will focus on the death, detainees’ treatment and British army methods.
It heard allegations that one Iraqi was forced to dance like Michael Jackson and another was urinated on.
In other allegations heard by the inquiry, one Iraqi said he had his face burnt when it was held next to a generator, a man was forced to lie face-down over a hole in the ground filled with excrement, and the detainees were “continually beaten” for hours on end.
Gerard Elias QC, counsel to the inquiry, said: “There can be little doubt that the detainees, or some of them, were the targets of physical assaults.
“They were beaten more or less continuously over the 48-hour period, kicked and punched a very large number of times, especially in the kidneys and lower back.”
The inquiry also heard allegations that soldiers tried to manipulate detainees’ moans into an “orchestrated choir”.
Mr Elias said: “There was shouting, moaning – even screaming – coming from the TDF (temporary detention facility) from time to time during the detention, according to some witnesses.
